- This gorgeous blonde was born Elaine Sterling on May 18, 1928 and raised in St. Louis before beginning her career as a face and hand model for cosmetic ads. She moved briefly to NYC before transporting herself to Hollywood, wherein she earned an MGM contract. She decorated a number of the studio's big musical pictures at that time under her real name, including bits in Easter Parade (1948) and Neptune's Daughter (1949) but found little room for advancement. Leaving MGM, she changed her moniker to Sara Shane and signed a one-year contract with Universal-International, where she was glimpsed in such films as Sign of the Pagan (1954) and Magnificent Obsession (1954). During this time, she married William Hollingsworth. They divorced after eight years of marriage in 1957.
Her parts got bigger on the screen once she left to freelance but the pictures, themselves, were not necessarily of a higher grade. Three Bad Sisters (1956), The King and Four Queens (1956) with Clark Gable, and Affair in Havana (1957), at the very least, put her in the featured role bracket. From there, she moved directly into TV roles and worked throughout much the late 1950s/early 1960s on such programs as Dragnet (1951), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955), The Outer Limits (1963) and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964). Her film career peaked when she was chosen to play the Jane-like role, opposite muscleman Gordon Scott's vine swinger, in Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959), one of the better entries in the series.
Never connecting strongly with the whirlwind social circle, she left the Hollywood limelight and retired from show biz in her late 30s. She turned to writing and began to devote herself to the study of pharmaceuticals. She wrote two books, 'Zulma' and 'Take Control of Your Health and Escape the Sickness Industry', the first was a work of fiction and the second was a book promoting healthy living. To escape the pollution of Los Angeles, she moved to Australia where she still lives on her 5 acre home. - Ray Barrett studied music and elocution and began acting at the age of eleven. Born in Masterson on New Zealand's North Island in 1952, young Rosslyn led a nomadic life, the family following her bank manager father to branches nationwide before settling in Taupo in 1975. She began her film career as a typist for the Auckland based exhibition outfit Amalgamated Theatres prior to decamping to the the U.K. where she found office work in the film production community.
Her antipodean ties gave her the edge when director Mike Newell was crewing his New Zealand production Bad Blood (1981), an account of the manhunt for farmer-turned-murderer Stanley Graham. Abernethy returned from England to act as production secretary, a role for which she earned a credit on such productions as Buddies; The Return of Captain Invincible; and, BMX Bandits.
The all-encompassing role provided training for the position of production co-ordinator, to which Abernethy progressed on the films The Coolangatta Gold; Cassandra; and, Slate, Wyn & Me.
It would be as the industry's pre-eminent production manager that Rosslyn Abernethy earned her reputation as one of Australia's most in-demand professionals. From her debut in the role in 1985 on Best Enemies, she would work steadily on productions like the mini-series Sword of Honour (1986); Howling III; the hit TV series Police Rescue (1989); the Kylie Minogue vehicle, The Delinquents; Traps; the international shoot Street Fighter with Jean Claude van Damme; The Real Macaw; the Hugh Jackman hit, Paperback Hero; and, the global hit TV series, The Sleepover Club (2003).
During this period, Abernethy adapted her organisational skills and legendary rapport with crew to oversee the art department of Fortress, starring Christopher Lambert. The Queensland shoot was a massive undertaking, an experience that prepared her for working with producer James Cameron on the cave-diving adventure Sanctum (2011) as production manager. On the 2017 thriller Out of the Shadows, Abernethy expanded her production manager role into that of line producer, a function she also undertook on the war drama, Escape and Evasion (2019). Her final production manager credit was on the thriller The Second, starring Rachael Blake, Susie Porter and Vince Colosimo.- Colin McEwan was born in 1941 in Australia. - Rosemary Margan was a water skiing champion, winner of six national titles, when she started her media career as a weather presenter at Melbourne's GTV9 in the mid-1960s.
She presented the weather at Nine for almost a decade - mostly by 'drawing' the weather and temperatures from standing behind a clear perspex screen. But despite the general impression that she was drawing the temperatures backwards so that they would appear in the correct order to viewers, it was later revealed that she was drawing the numerals as normal but the picture was flipped.
Margan was also a regular hostess at the TV Week Logie Awards in the 1970s, handing out the coveted statuettes to recipients as they came on stage. She also won two Logies herself for Most Popular Female Personality In Victoria - in 1969 and 1970.
Rosemary Margan and Bert Newton at the TV Week Logie Awards, 1969.
She left Nine in 1974 to have daughter Cathy but would later continue to appear on television presenting commercials on The Graham Kennedy Show. She was inadvertently caught up in controversy when Kennedy decided to interrupt one of her commercial presentations with his imitation crow call - emulating a certain swear word and which later saw Kennedy banned from appearing on live television. Margan was not phased by Kennedy's play on words, largely because - as she admitted many years later - she was an innocent "country girl" and not familiar with the obscenity that Kennedy had snuck into TV folklore.
During the 1980s Margan continued to present television commercials and appear on shows like Beauty And The Beast, before moving on to radio. She presented live read commercials on 3AW's morning show hosted by her brother-in-law Neil Mitchell. It was a role that she conducted for nearly 20 years before retiring in 2007 and moving to the Gold Coast.
Rosemary Margan died from Cancer on 6 December 2017 and is survived by husband Ross Mitchell, and daughter Cathy Godbold from a previous marriage. - Actor
